Pay attention closely, and you can hear the sound of birds, someone shuffling around a distant room (and possibly someone quietly talking in that room), a small car passing by, and the sounds of breathing.
This song, to me, is almost a recording of peaceful life now without throwing in anything too specific and possibly unrecognizable. Almost every human on earth will be able to relate to these sounds. If we were to go through something similar to The Last of Us, how foreign would most of these things sound in combination with the tone set by the relative peacefulness of the melody?
Who would have the luxury of being able to appreciate the little sounds anymore? When we might get a rare moment of peace, would we think of this moment as being from the world we’re living in, or would we think of it as a reminder of The Way It Was?
And as we recognize things aren’t the way they used to be… the tone becomes darker and more solemn. The breathing stays, but the birds and the cars are gone. We’re still here, but the world has changed with a new tone.
